There is no cure for CKD. In the final stages of the disease, when the kidneys fail, the only life-sustaining treatment is dialysis or kidney transplantation. Unfortunately, both are difficult and expensive processes and are largely unavailable to the thousands of people with CKD. There are different types of dialysis namely hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

PERCUTANIOUS CATHETER
Vascular Access
GRAFT
For a patient to undergo any kidney treatment an access needs to be created. In acute renal failure a vascath or temporary access needs to be created. A vascath is a non-tunneled catheter which is inserted in the ward and a permanent catheter is tunneled under the skin and inserted in theatre. There are also permanent accesses which are called arteriovenous fistula and arteriovenous graft, arteriovenous fistula is anastomoses of a vein and artery and arteriovenous graft.
It is recommend that any patient who commences haemodialysis should do so with an arteriovenous fistula as first choice, an arteriovenous graft as second choice, a tunnelled venous catheter as third choice and a non-tunnelled catheter as an option. Timely referral to the nephrologist is a prerequisite for the creation AV fistulas and it needs patent arteries and veins.
